As a writer I have had experience writing analytically, scientifically, and creatively. In high school I was enrolled in honors history classes where the main focus was analytically writing. Writing analytically meant looking for connections between major events in history. As for writing scientifically, my school’s science research program required us to construct projects from scratch to defend and inform our peers’ and competition judges  about. We often had to write research plans, literature reviews, research reports, and oral/visual presentations demonstrating our data.

My strengths as a writer include being able to descriptively provide details on whatever topic I’m writing about, use appropriate diction, provide an abundant amount of examples to support what I choose to write about. However my weaknesses include but are not limited to weak grammar skills, repetition, making sentences succinct and clear, and sometimes not using the appropriate scientific jargon in my research/lab reports.

I do employ several reading and editing strategies. My reading strategies go as far as rereading whole paragraphs when something is not clear initially, highlighting, jotting down notes and assessing the main idea behind what I just read. My editing strategies include looking for grammar and punctuation mistakes first, making sure there is a flow in the writing whether it be my work or my peers’ work. I also look to improve my diction.

My goals for this semester are to improve in my scientific writing skills, especially for research reports. I also want to improve in my public speaking and not stutter as much. I plan to enhance my strategies for reading, revising and self assessment.
